Bed and Breakfast in a peaceful region with lots to do - or simply relax
This area of south-west Scotland offers peace and tranquility in a stunning location, perfect for cyclists, walkers and those seeking a relaxing break away from a hectic city lifestyle. We are just over 2 hours' drive from Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow and an hour from Carlisle. We have unspoilt rolling countryside, stunning coastline vistas, sandy beaches and forests to explore.
The RSPB reserve at Mersehead is also close by, as are the world famous 7Stanes off-road biking trails in Mabie Forest and Dalbeattie (bikes can be hired both at Mabie and in Dalbeattie). There are a number of excellent golf courses including a championship course at Southerness just five minutes' drive away.
Kirkbean is the birthplace of John Paul Jones, known as “the father of the American Navy,’ a larger than life character who also held a high rank in the Russian Navy. There is a museum open from April to September.
New Abbey is also close by and is home to Sweetheart Abbey, a splendid late 13th-century Cistercian abbey founded by Devorgilla in memory of her husband, John Balliol. There is also the New Abbey Corn Mill, a carefully restored 18th-century water-powered oatmeal mill and a climb to the Waterloo Monument commemorating the famous battle.
Horse riding is available at a BHS horse riding centre nearby and, at Castle Douglas, Threave Garden and Estate boasts displays of daffodils, herbaceous beds, trees, heather garden and plant centre to create an all year-round attraction. Threave House also offers an insight into life in the 1930s. The local beaches and forests are always a great place to explore. The Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum at Dumfries charts the history of aviation since World War I with a large collection of aircraft and artifacts on the former World War II airfield.
